In an age of advanced science, much of transhumanity’s new knowledge is created and controlled by hypercorp interests, in pursuit of profit. Rebelling against this profit-based control, argonauts believe in the free exchange and creation of information and ideas.
The argonauts take their name from the Argonaut program of the pre-Fall US government, a cadre of consultants who advised on scientific matters. Taking that tradition of non-partisan engagement, many scientist escaped the Fall with vital information and technologies, heading into the outer system. Their main base is the Markov station in the Kuiper Belt, millions upon millions of miles from the nearest significant habitat. In the inner system, they hold stations around Sol and Luna.
Today, they strive to make all vital information open source. Although this may conflict with the hypercorps’ goals, their expertise is valued highly enough that the hypercorps still hire them out. Instead of credit as payment, the argonauts asked for vital, private information to be released to the public.
